Should Chiaki become lewdable?
Hi everyone, the subject we will deal with today is quite different.
I swore to myself when I started to develop Extra Life that I would always do what was necessary to be transparent with you. To tell you about my success as well as the failures I have encountered. Because don't think for a second that everything goes smoothly with every update.
We often encounter a ton of problems, the goal being to solve them in the best way possible. Today we will talk about Steam. Steam represents for any game developer the holy grail of the online store. However, it's necessary to think twice.
The positive points:
- Steam is strangely more permissive on the adult content, take for example the theme of "rape", as much on Patreon it is an almost immediate closure of page, on Steam it is not the case.
- The user base on Steam is about 130 million people. But I don't think for a second that everyone has activated "display adult content" but if 10% have done so it's still huge, much more than itch.io
- If the game sells well on Steam, it's the insurance to ensure the sustainability of extra life and to be able to offer more projects in the future.
The negative:
- Some contents authorized by Patreon (for the moment), are not authorized on Steam.
- Steam validation is not to be underestimated, it's much more complex than I thought. This earned me a ban.
- Steam, takes a 30% commission on absolutely all sales. As a reminder, Patreon takes about 16%, and itch.io is according to the will of the developer so between 100 and 0%.
The origin of the Steam ban.
I thought the ban came from using the term high school and dating sim in the game which implied minors. I guess there is no such thing as an 18-year-old high school student. The other problem was Chiaki, it's a character that was deliberately underage but had no lewd content (which is perfectly normal).
Steam refuses any representation of a minor in an adult game, whether there is content about her or not. As long as Chiaki is 12 years old in the game, Steam will never accept the game.
The good news is that even after a so-called ban, it's always possible to take the Steam validation exam by paying again the 100$ fee.
So here's what I'd like to suggest, forget the 12-year-old Chiaki and say hello to the new 18-year-old Chiaki instead. To keep some coherence in the story, Chiaki would be Minato's twin sister, extremely shy as if she was hiding a terrible secret.
The advantage of this character is that she doesn't speak much so I won't have to change much text. The last interesting point is that Chiaki is 18 years old and can become a lewdable. To finish convincing you, here is the sketch of the new 18 years old Chiaki. What do you think about it?

an alternative option is have her be 18 but serve the story in exactly the same way as before - in the sense that there still won't be any lewds and they will interact in the very same way, with some minor changes to make the text/story fit
the good is you avoid steam's bullshit without changing much in terms of story and content, and maybe get some practice in (if you need it, stuff is great as is)
the bad? she might feel different if she is an adult. additionally, there will inevitably be people upset about this change, especially some who later in come on, expecting to lewd her but not getting any hentai
either way, the decision is yours, i just wanted to provide an alternative option to "pay loads of money to steam/remove her entirely/lewd her". i wish you a very nice day sir!
The only pity is that Chiaki absolutely suits the intriguing story: poor child being in danger and noone can really help her (you know the rest). I don't think this line needs any lewdity. Even if we don't mention the main obvious reason, this will just not suit the story (well, includingly because of the main reason).
The new one Chiaki won't suit the story that well (a little child under threat thing penetrates right to the heart), so it will be felt differently, but the author will do his best, for sure. Also, new Chiaki is very cute and (contrary to the current one) naturally attractive in *that* way. Which is... well, natural and non-controversial.
Also, there should be no talking about two parallel versions. It will take not even twice as much of time to develop that, but a whole eternity (at least, I see it so, imagining the production process). Unfortunately, but for the sake of developement, we should just enjoy 0.4.9 version story with little Chiaki (or just keep it in our memories) and continue with a new one, with an adult (mature?) one. As a bonus, we will possibly have a new lewdable character (woo-hoo), which is an absolute cutie.
That "twin sister" thing reminds me of "Yosuga no Sora" with whiteheaded twins (at least they loved each other, unlike Minato and Chiaki).

If making her 18 can solve the Steam problem, then just do it
I mean, the loli version of Chiaki will most likely long live in the form of fanarts anyway, and we'll also got a canon grown-up version of Chiaki (and with canon lewds), so I don't think there's anything to argue about
I think it would be better to just make her 18 even if you don't plan on making her lewdable, because if she is in the game people will want her lewded and don't think anyone wants to see all the nasty comments of those people lewding a child.
If you're reading this and you're in that group of people she is a child fictional or not, and steam has every right not want something like that on their platform.

Anywho. If you want to sell your game on Steam, then you'll have to comply with their rules. If Valve says, "No characters under 18, regardless of what they do in the game," then you'll have to age-up Chiaki in order to sell on their platform.
She doesn't have to be lewdable just because she's 18, but... People will want to be able to.
BTW, the adult Chiaki concept looks cute as hell.

Maybe split versions? One that complies with Steam's guidelines and one that doesn't? Alternatively you can have a "Totally not an official mod" to correct her age after release. A bunch of games use this method.

This, I wouldn't mind if she got like an After Story Chapter that takes place years later where you can then add lewds to her . But with the current flow of the story, I would like it better if she stayed the way she was and become like a little sister who simply admire the MC and only later her feelings turned romantic.
I think the chance for steam is important, branching out is the best thing for the game.
I often can patch my lewd steam games with patches that you can download on the devs site, wouldn't that be a possibility? A "clean" version for steam, and a patch people can install for the original?

Honestly, if this plan actually works with the 18 year old Chiaki. It'd be a good idea, remove the whole loli aspect, just make her somewhat petite. She as far as I've played seems like a shy character, and the whole shy aspect + petite would make sense.
Ignore some of the weirdos here who want to see the current version kept and made lewdable. This whole remake of her character would do you good in terms of future monetary gain, especially if you can make it onto steam. Mainly because I guarentee some people don't trust itch.io or patreon enough to give some money for the game on here. And expanding onto steam would sorta introduce the game to people who've never heard of it, and don't wanna buy it on here. For those reading this who disagree, think with your brain not your dick.

My opinion, you can do both. Keep her as loli for now and just give her a special chapter that takes place years later when she's 18 before adding in the lewds. I have nothing against lewds for a petite character (there ARE petite females irl) but a 12 year old? That's a hard no.
Well, either way it's done I'm sure it'll be enjoyable. This is my most anticipated indie H game in quite a long time, so whatever you decide I'll take.
Dude, people keep saying they should do this. But it won't help better production and development. If they were to do this they'd most likely still come back to the Steam issue of no minors being depicted in the game. And before you try and reason with me after a week of no replys from anyone to you. Steam probably does semi-thorough inspections into the game, and if it has any lolis or underage characters on another download offsite. It'll probably still fail and maybe even get permanently banned from appling to join the steam store.
Hell the whole reason they made this post is because they wanted to see how people would react to one of the characters being changed and for them to be added to steam. And in the process they exposed people for wanting to fuck or see lewds of a literal child.

They don't, I can 100% guarantee you this. There are plenty of games on Steam that has loli/shota characters where they only change the age, loli/shota characters with lewds added in through patch, loli/shota characters that stay completely the same but they have no lewds. And they are 100% aware that the same game is being sold elsewhere with all the content they don't allow.
Main point of evidence: Kagura Games, do the research yourself.
All I'm saying (others opinions are their own) is that there's no need to change the character for the story. If they wish to add lewds for her, just give her a special chapter that takes place when she is of age. Simple as that.
Edit: Sorry, bit of clarification. Steam does not care about patches outside of their site, but yes any works with H they want all characters to be 18+ (some still get by visually but that's more high end company than indie works). So yeah, it's better to just change her to get by Steam and if RNG so chooses add original version back in through patch for story elements. For H, nah still a hard pass for me.
